La historia de Leo Manzano es sorprendente. Su padre, Jesús Manzano, partió varias veces desde México dejando atrás su natal Dolores Hidalgo, la legendaria cuna de la lucha de Independencia de México. Había poco trabajo y mucho menos educación. Su objetivo ir a Estados Unidos, en busca de un empleo para mantener a su familia, obtuvo la residencia legal en 1987. Leo Manazano nació el 12 de Septiembre de 1984. Pronto se le unió Laura, la hija mayor de Jesús y María. El gran rompimiento de la familia ocurrió en 1986 cuando una ley de amnistía general permitió a Jesús solicitar su residencia legal. María cruzó el Río Bravo, Leo a la edad de 4 años y su hermana fueron llevados a través de la frontera por amigos que ya vivían en Estados Unidos, quienes se hicieron pasar por sus padre, sus otros dos hermanos nacieron después en Texas. Les tomaría unos 10 años para que el Gobierno les otorgara a toda la familia la residencia.
Leo tenía 12 años era delgado y fuerte cuando supo que quería correr. En un principio el padre se burló del interés de Leo en las carreras de atletismo, bajo de estatura (1.62 cm) pero grande de corazon y enteresa, ganó nueve campeonatos de preparatorias estatales de Texas para ganarse una beca con los Longhorns. En Texas, ha dominado, con títulos colegiales en los 1,500 metros.
Leo Manzano se convirtió en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos en 2004 y en el 2007 calificó al campeonato mundial con un sorprendente segundo lugar en los 1,500 en el campeonato nacional de Estados Unidos, terminando apenas delante de Bernard Lagat dos veces medallista olímpico y poseedor del record norteamericano.
El mundial dio una dura lección de que la carrera internacional. Manzano llevaba apenas unos metros de su primera carrera cuando otro corredor lo derribó con un duro codazo al pecho. No logró llegar a la final, que ganó Lagat, su última gran participaciòn al ser seleccionado para los juegos olimpicos de Bejin 2008 donde logró avanzar a la etepa semifinal de los 1500 mts.
