Nassau, 23 nov (PL) El recordista mundial de salto de altura, el cubano Javier Sotomayor, ganó en la categoría de atletismo del Premio a los Idolos del Deporte Caribeño (CASI, por sus siglas en inglés).
Sotomayor obtuvo la distinción por encima de los jamaicanos Lennox Miller, Usain Bolt y Asafa Powell, el bahamés Troy Kemp, y los trinitarios Wendell Motley y Haseley Crawford.
El saltador ostenta la plusmarca del orbe al aire libre en su especialidad (2.45 metros), a lo cual agregó los títulos de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona-1992 y los Mundiales de Stuttgart-1993 y Atenas-1997.
Además, alcanzó los subtítulos en las Olimpiadas de Sydney-2000 y los torneos universales de Tokío-1991 y Gotemburgo-1995.
El ministro de Deportes de Bahamas, Desmond Bannister, entregó el lauro al embajador de Cuba en esa nación antillana, José Luis Ponce, pues Sotomayor -también poseedor del Premio Príncipe de Asturias- no asistió a la ceremonia.
Cuba también tenía en la lista de nominados a Ana Fidelia Quirot y Teófilo Stevenson, en los apartados de atletismo femenino y boxeo, respectivamente.
El CASI se creó el año pasado en Jamaica, con el interés de reconocer a deportistas del área que superaron grandes obstáculos para convertirse en monarcas olímpicos y del mundo.
